EAGLE HEAD CANES
WILL BE PRESENTED TO THEIR RECIPIENTS AT A CEREMONY THE third THURSDAY OF EVERY MONTH AT THE WARRIOR RESOURCE CENTER
PLEASE JOIN US IN HONORING THESE LOCAL VETERANS
There is a fascinating tradition that dates back to the civil war. When soldiers would come home, many with leg injuries, the neighbors would carve a cane for them which proudly bare a bald eagle head on top. Over time, as there were breaks in war and the government began stepping in with veteran care like the VA, the tradition faded away.
In 2004, a woodworking group came across the old story and restored the tradition creating Eagle Head Canes for veterans. The idea spread quickly across the country and now that tradition continues among our local woodworkers. The Black Canyon Wood Carvers, the Montrose Area Woodturners, and the Guild of Western Colorado Turners lovingly create these canes for veterans in Montrose and surrounding areas.
